Admissions procedure

During the first few weeks of a new school year, children discover their own paths and sort out the elements of their new situation: The teacher’s expectations, a new schedule, classroom resources, etc.

One of the important new experiences for children is finding new students in their class.

Daw Roza Win, Admissions OfficerIn order to help children make the transition from one school year to the next, the school considers a set of specific factors in determining the best placement. A class of students is an organism with a personality, style, strength, and inner life, which is unlike any other. This organism consists of the individual children and teacher who populate it. Each person is a vital, unique member, but the class truly is a sum that is greater than its parts. When the school assembles a new class, we consider a balance of factors, which will reflect life in the real world, which allows children to work to their potential. The school seeks to identify an even mix of genders, nationalities, languages, personality types, talents and ability levels. This blend of factors is pondered carefully before assigning children to next year’s class groups. Given time for all adjustments to be made, we are confident that children and parents will be well served by the placements we determine. No placements will be made based on personal friendships and such placements may not be requested by parents. Elementary teachers make their recommended class split lists of continuing students to the elementary principal during the first week of May. This recommendation determines placement.

When a child is first admitted to International School Yangon the school follows the same philosophy as described above. The adjustments to a new school during the school year may be difficult for a newcomer, since the culture and dynamics of a classroom is already set. Naturally, new students seek a comfort level and they familiarize in their new environment. The teacher understands this challenge and seeks to make the school a warm and inviting place.
