Our goal is to provide students with a sound foundation for future learning. The elementary program focuses on the child as an active learner with a curriculum designed to cover all of the basic skills and emphasize critical thinking. We work to develop individual strengths and promote a high level of inquiry based learning.

The ISY elementary school is organized into grade levels from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5. The ultimate goal of our program is to guide students towards becoming responsible, productive citizens in a rapidly changing world.

Lower Elementary – Grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2

Our curriculum is designed to develop the basic skills necessary for a solid learning foundation. We strive to address the individual needs, interest, and development levels of each child. Through the lower elementary grades, our students build academic skills with an emphasis in reading, phonics, writing, math concepts and problem solving, which are integrated through topics and themes based on deeper understandings. These concepts are applied through real-world examples and students are encouraged to apply their knowledge in their surrounding environment.

Upper Elementary – Grade 3 through Grade 5

The upper elementary curriculum continues to refine the basic skills with a greater emphasis on independent study and a larger individual role in learning. Our students are involved in traditional academic disciplines while building the foundation for being a life long learner. We integrate historical and cultural themes and science skills with our academic program and guide students to use all available resources for assignments, projects, and presentations. The upper elementary curriculum includes a variety of cooperative learning opportunities and encourages students to take part in leadership opportunities as we work to become responsible, productive citizens.

Specialist Classes: Music, Art, Physical Education, Computer Instruction and Foreign Language

ISY is proud to offer these specialist classes throughout the elementary school. Each class offers a unique opportunity to develop a wider range of skills and concepts. The elementary specialist classes are designed to enrich each student’s academic experience and broaden the themes in the classrooms. Each specialist area is an integral part of our curriculum and gives our students a wider range of opportunities to develop necessary skills, build strengths, and take part in a variety of academic experiences.

Physical Education, Art, Music, and Computer Instruction classes meet twice per week.

Foreign Language classes in Mandarin or French meet three times per week.

Beginning Band is offered for students in Grade 5.
