Guidance and counselor's information
Janet Hallwood, MS/HS Guidance CounselorThe school counselor is a student advocate who works cooperatively with other staff members as a team to ensure a positive learning environment. Emphasis is placed on having a balanced program that addresses a broad range of developmental needs. The guidance program at the International School Yangon follows the guidelines of the National Standards for School Counseling Programs. It supports students, parents, teachers and administration. The purpose of the program is to promote and enhance the learning process. I work with the school’s mission to support the academic achievement of all students as they prepare for the ever-changing world of the 21st century. Its primary goal is enabling all students to achieve success in school. Our counseling program focuses on facilitating student development in three areas:

Academic Development

The academic standards of the school serve as a guide for the counseling program to implement strategies and activities that support and maximize student learning. These include:

  • Acquiring skills, attitudes and knowledge to learn effectively;
  • Employing strategies to achieve success in school;
  • Understanding the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community.

Career Development

Program strategies provide the foundation for acquiring the skills that enable students to make a successful transition from school to the world of work. These include:

  • Strategies to achieve future career success and job satisfaction;
  • Fostering an understanding of the relationship between personal qualities, education and training, and the world of work;
  • The development of career goals by all students as a result of career awareness and experiential activities.

Personal/Social Development

Program standards provide the foundation for personal and social growth which contributes to academic and career success.

These include:

  • The acquisition of skills, attitudes and knowledge which help students to respect self and others;
  • The use of effective interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to negotiate successfully in the 21st century.

I wear many hats – negotiator, helper, listener, conflict manager, and advocate. I have an open door policy and encourage all parents and their children to touch base with me anytime. I look forward to working with all of you.

Sincerely,
Janet Hallwood
